The Smithtown Town Council in cooperation with Heart and Health Medical held a free heart screening for town employees and their families, on February 21, 2013, to promote wellness and to bring awareness during American Heart Month, which is sponsored by the American Heart Association.

With heart disease still being among the number one killers of Americans, the American Heart Association has held Go Red for Women Month along with its Heart Awareness Month for ten years. This is because more women are suffering from heart attacks, increasing at a very high rate. It is estimated that 43 million women are affected by heart disease. Heart disease does not discriminate, but it is the alarming rate of heart disease among women that had caused much concern.

In today’s world, workers are inundated with different stressors that can cause significant health issues. By careful screenings we are able to take a keen assessment of employees’ current health status, using the most current technology. By doing this, we can further reduce the risk of developing chronic illnesses. Prevention and early detection are the hallmarks of modern medicine. Prevention is the key to longevity and maintaining a healthy heart. ” David Kavesteen, MD FACC FCCP.

“The Town of Smithtown and its employees are fortunate to have a leading cardiologist, Dr. Kavesteen, offer his services to the town. Prevention is a key to controlling heart disease.” stated Smithtown Councilman Bob Creighton.

Town Clerk Vinny Puleo said, “I would like to thank Councilman Wehrheim for setting up and getting the town to sponsor the Heart and Health screening and also thank Dr. Kavesteen and his staff for volunteering their time to do the screenings at the Smithtown Landing Country Club. This is an example of the medical community working hand in hand with local government, it benefits everyone”.

“I want to thank Dr. Kavesteen for coming to Smithtown and offering his Heart Healthy Program to our employees. One of the most important factors for any business is for employees to remain healthy and productive”, said Councilman Ed Wehrheim.

“My men perform physically demanding and stressful work, in all types of weather and driving conditions, to keep Smithtown roads safe. A preventive health measure, like free employee heart screening, is just smart business and good for workers’ health. I applaud this effort by the Councilmen to provide this opportunity to our town workforce”, said Glenn Jorgensen, Smithtown Superintendent of Highways.
