Holter Monitoring

Holter Monitoring

The Holter monitor assists the cardiologist to diagnose symptoms of dizziness, palpitations (a sensation of fast or irregular heart rhythm) or blackouts towards what is going on in the heart, electrically. A Holter monitor is used to detect any abnormal heart rhythm and to evaluate the patient’s EKG during episodes of chest pain and other symptoms.

Holter monitoring is also called Ambulatory Electrocardiography. A Holter monitor is a machine about the size of a camera with leads (wires) that are attached to electrodes (small round sticky pads) that are placed on your chest. The monitor records your heart beating for a period of time determined by your doctor, from 24 hours up to 14 days.

If you take medicine for arrhythmias, a Holter monitor test will determine how well it is working for you. It also shows your doctor how your heart works during activity and rest. You will need to keep track of any symptoms such as chest pain or unusual heartbeats as well as any strong emotions such as anger or fear while you are wearing the monitor.

Your doctor may recommend this test if you present any of the following symptoms:

  1. Palpitations
  2. Atrial fibrillation
  3. Chest Pain
  4. Arrhythmia
  5. Faintness
  6. Vertigo (dizzy spells)

In addition to the recommendation of use for an Event or Holter Monitor at anytime you present one of the symptoms above, if there is reason to believe you may be susceptible to these symptoms in the future, you physician may also recommend it. If you have a significant family history or personal health history of cardiac risk factors even if you are asymptomatic, a monitor may be recommended. Sometimes arrhythmic episodes occur and we are unaware of it so it is important to see a physician if any of these scenarios apply to you.
