Cardiac Catheterization

Cardiac Catheterization is a common treatment used for people suffering from various heart conditions. During this procedure, a catheter (a thin, long tube) is entered through a blood vessel (either in your neck, arm, or groin) and is threaded to your heart. This helps doctors collect blood samples, measure blood pressure and blood flow in each of your heart’s chambers as well as measure the oxygen levels. Also, during this procedure a Cardiac Angiography is performed which allows a physician to gain visibility of the condition of a patient’s arteries through the use of contrast dyes.

Here at Heart & Health Medical, patients all over Long Island have had Cardiac Catheterizations performed for various diseases and disease screenings. It is most commonly used to examine, arterial diseases where a blockage or narrowing of the arteries exists.

Cardiac catheterization is typically a low risk, minimally invasive procedure. It is merely one methodology that your doctor may use to diagnose and treat your heart-related conditions. Whether you visit our Nassau County or Suffolk County locations, your physician will examine your physical conditions in conjunction to your desires and concerns in order to  recommend  the best course of treatment.

Cardiac catheterization permits doctors to perform a spread of tests and treatments:

  • Angioplasty to widen a narrowed or closed heart artery.
  • Blood clot removal, which involves injection of a clot-dissolving medication into the artery via the already inserted tubing.
  • Coronary Roentgenography, which involves taking X-ray pictures of your heart and blood vessels. Your doctor will receive a visualization on a video screen as he or she performs your internal organ catheterization. Chest Roentgenography will give insight into the specific coronary arteries that are blocked.
  • Heart tissue diagnostic Assay, which involves removing a sample of muscle cells and testing it for cancer and alternative diseases.
  • Measure the pressure within the heart.
  • Measuring atomic number 8 levels within the heart.
  • Repair of some birth defects of the Heart, like AN chamber congenital heart defect. AN chamber congenital heart defect could be a hole between the higher chambers of the guts.
  • Repair or replacement of pathologic heart valves. Heart valve replacement via a tubing isn’t a regular procedure but is available at many medical centers.
  • Stent placement via a mesh tube
  • Blood Sampling
