Holter & Event Monitoring:
The Holter test helps the cardiologist to correlate symptoms of dizziness, palpitations (a sensation of fast or irregular heart rhythm) or black outs. A Holter monitor is used to detect any abnormal heart rhythm and to evaluate the patient’s EKG during episodes of chest pain and other symptoms.
Holter monitoring is also called ambulatory electrocardiography. A Holter monitor is a machine about the size of a camera. It has leads (wires) that are attached to electrodes (small round sticky pads) which are placed on your chest. The monitor makes a tape recording of your heart beating for a period of time determined by your doctor, from 24 hours to as much as 14 days.
You may need Holter monitoring if you have problems with your heart, such as chest pain, fainting (passing out) or unusual heartbeats (arrhythmias). If you take medicines for arrhythmias, a Holter monitor test will tell caregivers how your medicine is working. The Holter monitor recording shows your doctor how your heart works during activity and rest. You will need to keep track of everything you do in a diary including any symptoms such as chest pain or unusual heartbeats or any strong emotions such as anger or fear.
Your doctor may recommend this test if you present any of the following symptoms:
- Palpitations
- Atrial fibrillation
- Chest Pain
- Arrhythmia
- Faintness
- Vertigo (dizzy spells)
You can have an event/Holter monitor anytime you present the symptoms listed above. Also, the doctor may prescribe an event/Holter monitor if you have a significant family history or personal health history of cardiac risk factors even if you are asymptomatic. Sometimes arrhythmic episodes occur and we are unaware of it.
